Saffrons Eco Island
 |
 |
Saffrons Eco Island is a cute little Island in Koggala Lake, just a few kilometres inland about 15 minutes drive from Habaraduwa which is 20 minutes drive or 12kms Southeast of Galle.
There are other islands in the lake but only two have freehold titles, and Saffrons Eco Island is the only one with fresh well water. Saffrons Eco Island is largely undeveloped with just a small eco-lodge and ablutions block, a bunker which houses the water pump, generator and a small storage space. It has a double canoe with a simple timber deck which the boatman paddles to and from the mainland. |
There are cinnamon, cashew, fantastic mango and coconut trees, and a pair of nesting sea eagles and one nocturnal porcupine, never seen but occasionally a lost quill is found. It has great mud crabs, fish and prawns aplenty. Steps make it easy to get from the boat landing area up to the Eco-lodge. A timber deck creates a very pleasant outdoor dining and living area in the little lodge, waiting for you build a more substantial hideaway.
One of Sri Lanka’s leading architects was commissioned to design an eco building of bedrooms, living and dining areas connected by boardwalks treading lightly on the island, below the treetops. This concept is available to the purchaser. It was not built because of the reluctant sale due to sudden ill health of one of the owners.
It is called SaffronsEcoIsland, but the original deeds have a Sinhalese name that roughly translates as “Dead Leopard Point”.
